How To Grow Cannabis
Tips For Growing Autoflowering Seeds.
Autoflowering seeds are an entirely separate category of the Cannabis and Marijuana family, originally created using a Ruderalis male. Found growing naturally in northern Siberia, Ruderalis is a form of Hemp and member of the Cannabis family. Used as cheap, easy-to-grow cattle and animal feed, it has the capacity to automatically flower under any number of light-hours.
What Are Autoflowering Seeds?
Cross-breeding began during the late 1970’s, aiming to create Cannabis strains that would automatically flower, without the need for long hours of undisturbed darkness. Although successful, these plants tended to produce poor yields, small buds and low-levels of THC. Subsequent gene development, isolated the specific autoflowering gene, allowing it to be introduced into existing strains, with no loss of appearance, flavor or quality.
The last 15-years has seen a significant improvement in the yield and quality, produced by Autoflowering Cannabis seeds. Demand has increased, with some indoor and outdoor growers preferring to grow autoflowering varieties, rather than the traditional feminized seeds. Almost all of the best, most popular strains now have an autoflowering alternative.
Modern, high-quality Autoflowering seeds produce buds with the same traits and characteristics as the Feminized versions. The isolation of the Ruderalis gene, allows it to be introduced into the plant, without loss of flavor, aroma or potency. The only difference is the plants grow and mature simultaneously, rather than through a Vegetative Stage and Flowering Cycle.
Growing Autoflowering Seeds.
The rise in popularity of Autoflowering seeds can be traced back to outdoor growers across California and the southern states of the USA. The long hours of strong sunlight, made growing Cannabis outdoors, easy, but the endless months, waiting for harvest-time, could seem to take forever. With the new varieties able to produce good yields of high-quality buds, growers now had the opportunity of generating much faster harvests.
Planted outdoors from the middle of Spring, Autoflowering seeds simultaneously grow and flower over a period of approximately 10-weeks. The buds fully mature, regardless of the number of darkness hours they receive, producing their biggest, best quality harvests during the very height of the Summer months. Cannabis plants could now be cultivated outdoors generating early, mid and late Summer harvests.
Our Autoflowering seeds are completely feminized, guaranteed to germinate and produce pure-female plants. Read our Tips On Germinating Cannabis Seeds to give your plants the very best start. Once sprouted, allow the seedlings a few weeks to develop, before placing them outside. Autoflowering seeds can also be successfully cultivated indoors, using similar methods and techniques.
With their combined vegetative and flowering cycles, Autoflowering plants do not grow as large, or as tall as traditional feminized varieties. Typical plants reach approximately one-meter, although this varies, depending upon strain selection and growing conditions. Yields vary, with individual plants producing anything from a couple of ounces, up to 15 ounces each.
Average total growing and flowering times are approximately 14-weeks from seed to complete maturity. This includes time for the seed to germinate, as well as the first few weeks as it sprouts and develops. With just a small amount of care and attention, the plants will bud and ripen, producing a successful harvest for even the most novice grower.
Growing Autoflowering Cannabis plants is far easier than cultivating traditional, feminized varieties. Many of the techniques used to improve the quality and yield, do not work as well with these plants and can often have a detrimental effect. Tips For Early Development.
The first three weeks from germination are crucial in the development of Autoflowering Cannabis plants. Even more so, than with feminized strains, which have a separate vegetative cycle to develop. Paying special care and attention to your seedlings now, will pay dividends in the weeks to come. Once germinated, carefully place the seeds into reasonably-sized pots, around two-litres is ideal.
As soon as the seedling sprouts, the clock starts ticking! Autoflowering plants have a dedicated life-span. Maximizing growth at every opportunity is essential in achieving the biggest harvests. Your growing medium needs to be light, aeriated and fluffy, offering no resistance to the new, developing roots. Do not add Nitrogen at this stage, all good-quality mediums, contain enough for at least the first weeks of growth. Root-booster formula’s can enhance development during the coming days.
Your soil needs to be kept slightly moist, but never saturated and water-logged. Often, new, beginner growers, over-water their seedlings, drowning the roots. A slightly-moist growing medium supplies all the water a young seedling requires. While oxygenating the soil, allowing the roots to develop.
Use a propagator during the first few weeks to increase the humidity. Cannabis plants enjoy high-levels of humidity during the vegetative stage, it also helps to keep the soil moist. Do not cut-off their access to fresh-air. High levels of CO2 during this stage can help to increase growth and development.
Long hours of strong, good quality light is essential. Use energy-efficient bulbs, fluorescent tubes or LED grow-lamps to generate the best light-spectrum for early growth, lots of ‘blue-light’. Do not place the light-source too far away, this will encourage the seedlings to stretch. However, too close and you run the risk of burning, or scorching the delicate leaves.
Gentle air-movement across the top of the seedlings, during these first weeks, can have positive effects. Not only does it allow the leaves access to fresh air and levels of CO2, it also strengthens the main-stem, allowing for greater uptake of nutrients, in later-life.
After 2 – 3 weeks of development, your seedlings should be ready to plant outdoors, or into a larger, final pot. Don’t allow the roots to become ‘pot-bound’ before transplanting and take care not to damage them during the repotting process. Over the next 10 -weeks your plants are going to grow, flower and mature, ready for harvesting.
Tips For Maximum Growth and Flowering.
Light has the biggest effect on your Autoflowering Cannabis plant. The number of hours they receive, the strength and spectrum, all have a huge bearing on the final yield and quality. With no requirement for hours of darkness, the biggest yields are generated during the height of the Summer months. Time your seedlings to go outdoors, from the middle of May. These last weeks, through June and July, have the longest day-light hours, with the strongest intensity.
Consider using a greenhouse. If your location and laws permit, a greenhouse can really maximize your crops potential yield. Plants can be sheltered from rogue, Spring frosts, as well as later, seasonal storms. Artificial lights can be installed to extend the day-light hours, or boost levels, outside peak times of the day. CO2 can also be added and contained, really maximizing the plants growth. Solar grow-lights now be cheaply purchased, storing energy during the day and emitting good-quality light from dusk. These can be used to extend growing hours, without wiring or running costs.
A small amount of training during the early weeks will help maximize future budding sites. Gently bending the stem will encourage it to thicken, as well as promoting more lateral branches. The aim is to encourage multiple, strong branches to develop, producing many, large buds. Rather than a tall, thin plant, with a single, large cola. Do not prune or cut the growing tips. Neither should you bend the stem to a crease, super-cropping the plant. This will reduce the overall yield, as the plants do not have the time to recover.
Use the largest sized pot available, with a good-quality growing medium. Outdoor growers may prefer to plant directly into the ground. This should always be prepared first, digging out a suitably-sized hole, then filling it with prepared soil and growing mediums. Do not over-fed your plants, most of what they require during their fast lives should be already within the soil, if it’s of good quality. Stop adding nutrients from week-8 and allow the plant to mature, intaking small amounts of pure-water. Ensure the correct PH of around 6.0 – 6.5 with all feeds.
Prune lower, weak branches to encourage greater growth. Do not be tempted to remove any of the fan, or shade leaves during the early weeks, as these provide the plant energy, for later flowering. Ensure adequate air-flow around the leaves and branches. Remove yellowing, lower leaves during the last couple of weeks as they dry-up, wither and die naturally.
With good conditions, plenty of room and long-hours of strong, direct sunlight, Autoflowering Cannabis plants can generate between 5 – 7 ounces of top-quality buds per plant, on average. Once dried and cured, individual strains display similar characteristics, flavor, aroma and effects as their traditional feminized alternative.
What To Do Next.
Growing Autoflowering seeds can be a fast, easy way to produce your own, high-quality buds. Requiring less care and attention than traditional varieties, they can be successfully cultivated indoors, or outside, producing several harvests per year, or growing season. Allow approximately 10 weeks from sprouting, then begin to check for levels of maturity.
Although the growth and flowering of Autoflowering seeds differs from that of traditional Cannabis plants, the maturity process remains the same. The white flowers, or pistils will change to a darker, amber color, buds will swell and the trichomes will fill with a milky, cloudy liquid.
