How To Grow Cannabis
Sea of Green V’s Screen of Green Technique.
Ways to Improve Your Cannabis Yields is a must for any new growers, achieving a good quality harvest is proof of success. However, after those first, initial grows, armed with a little more knowledge and experience, many look to improve the yield from their plants. This article covers two of the basic techniques used by commercial growers to maximize their harvests.
Both the Sea-of-Green and Screen-of-Green cultivation methods have been utilized for hundreds of years and are not limited to just Cannabis. Arable farmers maximize their output with a similar ‘close-quarter’ growing technique. While commercial orchards are perfect examples of low-stress training and the Screen-of-Green method.
Knowing which technique works best for you, often comes down to your choice of strain and growing conditions. Indoor growers have greater control over when their plants are sent to flower and can often use either method. Outdoor growers must wait for nature to induce flowering, selecting the Screen-of-Green as their chosen method.
Both of these proven methods can increase the yields you achieve from your Cannabis plants. There are advantages and disadvantages to both techniques, decide which works the best for you.
The Sea-of-Green Technique.
The Sea-of-Green technique is probably the oldest cultivation method known to man. It involves filling an area with as many plants as possible to produce a fast harvest. Wheat, corn and arable crops are perfect examples of its commercial use. Highly effect for growing Cannabis indoors, it can quickly generate a thick, even canopy, filling the growing area.
Many new growers prefer to use this technique, it’s slightly easier to master, as well as producing quicker harvests. It works very well with pot and soil culture and is often the preferred method for hydroponic growers. This simple technique can be utilized to fill any area, from small, hobby tents, through to commercial grow-rooms.
The basic principle of the Sea-of-Green technique is to just grow the upper-most section of the plant. Rather than a tall plant, with multiple branches and buds, they are kept small and squat, often with no more than 8 – 10 side nodes. The plants are flowered after just a few weeks of vegetative growth, producing a large, central cola and several main buds.
Indica-dominant Cannabis seeds are the best choice for the Sea-of-Green method. Naturally short and squat, with a shorter flowering cycle. Once germinated, place your young seedlings into good-sized pots, filled with a high-quality medium. Fill the growing area with as many plants as possible, allowing each one approximately one-meter square of growing room.
Plants cultivated using the Sea-of-Green method require a short vegetative cycle. Allow them to grow to approximately thirty centimetres, developing just a few branches and then send them to flower. Prune away the lower leaves and weak branches, this will help to improve airflow and focus plant development.
With good quality Cannabis seeds and correct strain selection, your plants should be ready to harvest 8/9 weeks from flowering. The growing area should look like a sea of buds and green leaves, hence the name, Sea-of-Green. Harvesting is very easy as the plants are small, with short branches, a central cola and only a few, good-sized buds.
The Sea-of-Green technique is a fast, easy method of producing high-quality harvests. It does require more plants to be cultivated within a given area, which may contravene state laws. Check to see how many Cannabis plants you can grow, while remaining within legal limits.

The Screen-of-Green Technique.
The Screen-of-Green technique is slightly more complicated and difficult to master. Unlike the Sea-of-Green method, it requires a longer vegetative period to perform correctly, utilizing a selection of low-stress training methods to amplify the effects. Per-plant yields are maximized by using this technique.
Instead of cultivating many small plants to fill the growing area, only a select few are chosen. This method is ideal for indoor growers in legalized states, as they can remain within the legal cultivation limits. The per-square meter yields are similar using either method, but the per-plant yields are higher using this method.
Once your young seedlings have germinated, they will need a pot for their roots to develop. A large plant has a complicated root structure to supply its needs. Use the largest pot possible to fill the growing area, single or double plant hydroponic systems work very well and can be purchased cheaply online.
As the young plant develops, a number of low-stress training techniques can be used to encourage lateral growth. This technique is often used to control tall plants, reducing future height issues and encouraging the development of side branches, shoots and buds.
Bend, prune and train your plant to grow laterally, rather than upward. As it develops nodes and branches, train these to grow away from the stem, horizontally, slowly developing an even canopy. A screen can be suspended over the plant, and its branches kept beneath the level, helping to forming a thick even canopy. Prune and train your growing stems daily.
Once the entire screen is filled, send the plant to flower. If you have trained the branches laterally and along the underside of the screen, the future budding sites will now begin to pop through the holes in the mesh screen and begin to flower. The goal is to produce a screen of buds, all of similar size and density.
The Screen-of-Green method works particularly well with Sativa-dominant Cannabis plants. These tend to grow taller, producing longer, thinner branches than typical Indica varieties. Per-plant yields are at their highest, with the minimal number of plants and seeds required. The disadvantage is the longer vegetative period this method requires.
